DRWILLEM is the person behind this internet site and was born as Willem Johannes van IJperen in Vlaardingen, The Netherlands, in 1950.

After the primary school he went to the academy and passed the A-levels for humanities (HBS-A) and sciences (HBS-B). In 1969 he went to university, first to Leyden (Universiteit Leiden) for Psychology, and in 1974 to Rotterdam (Erasmus Universiteit) where he studied Law, Philosophy and Medicine for which he was awarded BSc, MSc and MD. DRWILLEM enrolled the Keele University curriculum in 2000 (awarded an MA) and he trained there as a medical ethicist. In 2017 DRWWILLEM joined the Moray College of the University of Highlands and Islands and was awarded BA(Hons) for Philosophy, Politics and Economics.

DRWILLEM registered as a medical doctor on April 24th 1981, and joined the specialist register for paediatrics on 1st September 1988 (the Netherlands, BIG 79025066201, now retired), 1st May 2001 (UK, GMC 2814148) and APLS (2004) with regular updates.

Hospitals where DRWILLEM worked as junior are: Zuiderziekenhuis and Ikazia Ziekenhuis, both in Rotterdam. As trainee he worked also in Zuiderziekenhuis and in Sophia Kinder Ziekenhuis (Rotterdam) as well as StStephens Hospital, Westminster Hospital and Westminster Children's Hospital (all in London). As paediatrcian DRWILLEM worked in Zuiderziekenhuis, Van Weel-Bethesda Ziekenhuis (Dirksland), Holy Ziekenhuis (Vlaardingen), Schieland Ziekenhuis (Schiedam) and Horacio Oduber Hospitaal (Aruba). In Rotterdam DRWILLEM also worked for the confidential doctor service in Child Protection and was a member of the Schisis Team (cleft palate team).

After moving to Scotland in 2001 DRWILLEM worked for the NHS in the United Kingdom until 30th June 2017. He worked in Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin, Aberdeen Children's Hospital in Aberdeen and Ninewells Hospital in Dundee and in Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert (Central Scotland). In previous appointments DRWILLEM was an educational supervisor for trainees in General Practice and Paediatrics. For many years already DRWILLEM was involved in the formal teaching of medical ethics for the Nursing College (Rotterdam) and medical students (Aberdeen University) and for the University of Edinburgh Medical School.

DRWILLEM worked as a general paediatrician with responsible for the acute and chronic care for babies, children and young persons up to the age of 16 years. For many years DRWILLEM was involved in the paediatric diabetes care and published about ketoacidosis treatment. Several years he organised an Essay Competition for young persons with diabetes. In his last appointment DRWILLEM focussed his attention on acute paediatric care, community paediatrics and clinical ethics.

On the internet DRWILLEM is a virtual doctor and cannot be consulted about individual cases.

DRWILLEM retired from medical practice in the NHS on 1st July 2017.
