DIABETES ESSAY AND POEM COMPETITION 2009

Rachael 26/07 11 My Journey

When my journey with diabetes started
It felt like all happiness had departed
On a boat that I thought would never return
That left me frightened and full of concern.

But I soon found out that all hope was not lost
When I found out that Dr Willem and Alison would help me whatever the cost
They taught me how to look after myself
And told me not to worry
Because as time went on things would become less blurry.

Things were a bit complicated going back to school
As no one seemed to understand
That I was sometimes in need of a helping hand
But I soon got the knack
Of checking my blood and having an extra snack.

Three Years on and life is good
I’ve even learned to enjoy gluten free food!
I’ve been to diabetes camp and had a ball
Being in charge of diabetes is not so hard after all
I look on the bright side when I feel down
I live life to the full
I have no reason to frown!
