DIABETES ESSAY AND POEM COMPETITION 2009

Lauren 12/06 12 Lauren's experience of Diabetes

Soon after my 10th birthday,
I began to lose weight,
I had no idea why,
I seemed in a healthy state.

People began to notice,
that I couldn't stop drinking,
and that is what got,
my mum really thinking.

So I went to the doctors,
but they thought I was fine,
so they did some tests,
and changed there minds.

I was taken to hospital,
where everything was explained,
when I was told I'd have to do injections,
I thought it would kane.

To my suprise,
the injections weren't too bad,
the blood monitoring it what,
made me really mad.

After a few days I was back at home,
and things were under control,
my sugar level was coming down,
things were going fine, on the whole.

But just months later,
I was thirsty again,
my injection sites hurt,
so I was on a different insulin pen.

Soon I returned to hospital,
feeling extremely ill,
so I stayed a few days,
and had time to chill.

Back at home I was completely fine,
they moved me from 2 injections to 4,
but I had no reason to whine.

It was a bit easier,
but now 2 years on,
I'm back on 2 injections,
because that's what I agreed upon.

I moved back to 2,
because 4 began to hurt,
I can sleep without worrying,
so now I'm more alert.

Although it is still hard,
I am doing okay,
and hopefully I'll get it under control,
and that is how it will stay!
