DIABETES ESSAY AND POEM COMPETITION 2009

Lauren 11/06 13 You can't ... They will always find out

I have had diabetes for 10 years. I was aboard in Portugal on holiday at the time. In Easter 2006 I was rushed to hospital after staying with a friend in Durham. I had keytones really bad.

Last year I changed insilns from 2 injections a day (1 in the morning and 1 at tea time) to 4 a day (novorapid).

I like chocolate but sometimes I take it to the extreme. This year was a bad year for me. I got really bad if I would of carried on I would be I hospital.

In January to March 2009 I was going to the shop nearly everyday. I look back now and think I was killing my self. To cover myself up, I put false number in the book. This was going on for 3 months. I look back and regret it. But what else I did was miss injections. My mum and dad know look back and see “Why didn’t they notice?”

At the time my skin went really dry and blotchy. I use to go and sit in my bedroom. I was miserable, moody and just wanted to be on my own all the time. Also I was always hungry and thirsty. I went to clinic and my HbA1c test come back and it was 11.9. I knew I needed to change my life style

Over the last 3 months I have worked really hard and it paid off for it. I went to clinic and my HbA1c test was 8.2. I fell so much happier and more egger and active.

But I haven’t gone without. I still have some sweet things (TREATS) in my packed lunch. I have proved to my self I can still have some chocolate and get my BM low. If I have learnt something is that diabetes don’t stop you doing things. Diabetes is a CONDITION not an illness and you can still live life like a normal person. I control my diabetes, it doesn’t control me.
