DIABETES ESSAY AND POEM COMPETITION 2009

Laura 26/05 16 What a strange word

You know some things not right
When you look at yourself and your tummy feels tight
You cant help it but your wetting the bed
“What’s going on?” you say in your head?

Your rushed to the doctors in a car with flashing lights;
It’s shiny and warm, and O so bright
So why in your head are you still unsure
Of what’s going on in your life anymore.

Your mum sits there crying, bowing her head
Whilst your dad talks to the doctor
“It’s not good news” he said.

And that’s when you realise
Some things gone wrong
“You’ve got diabetes,
And will do your whole life long”

What a strange word, you think to yourself
But you understand then its to do with your health
“Here’s one for day, and one for the night,
You can do it yourself but it will take up all your might!”

So you take the sharp object, and a pinch of your skin;
Slowly hold it up then put the needle right in.
No gasp of horror, no sudden shock
For you know this is your life now, whether you like it or not.

But as you get older you learn and find,
You still run around having fun in the sun
And the occasional treat never hurt anyone;
You thought you were different but now you can see
That diabetes is not as bad as they made it out to be!
