DIABETES ESSAY AND POEM COMPETITION 2009

Lauren 11/05 9 My five years of bravery

My expirence started when I was 3 and being diagnosed I was in hospital and all i was doing was drinking drinks and going to the play room and playing with this girl who had just jumped out of her window from her home. Everybody was in and out crying and sniffing they were so upset but they copped because of all of the nurses especially a nurse called Janine. I cried I kicked I done everything I even bit my mums cheek when I was throwing a wobboly when they were jabbing me but I got through it and then I went home. One year later I started school I was a helpful girl and one day I helped this girl in my class called Abbie she was really upset and she was scared and she was always on about "I wish that I could do my finger prick instead of everyone having to do it for her, so one day after school I said I will teach you how to do your finger prick so I did I helped her over and over again and then I said to her you have a go Abbie so she did she did her own finger prick. The teachers all watched and they gave us both a head teachers award. I am nine now and i can do my own jabs and finger pricks and i have four jabs a day I do three on my own and one my mum and my stepdad Ian does because I have to do that one in my bottom. I am coaping very well now and we have been celebrating because of my five years of bravery and hard work. my hba1c has been up and down at first it was 10.1 then it was 9.8 now it is 8.8 that is my best score ever but I want to get it lower still. I dont see diabetes being a big problem in my life because I can do the same as a healthy body can. One day I hope to have a career as helping people with diabetes.
The End
