DIABETES ESSAY AND POEM COMPETITION 2009

Jessica 09/05 13 Diagnosis

The 15th of May could've been any old day,
Went off to school in the usual way,
But the Doctor's appointment was made for half ten,
So my Mum came and got me and we left again.
We told him we didn't think things were quite right,
Drinking too much and getting up in the night,
He ummed and he ahhed and he made himself clear,
Diabetes was common and I "had nothing to fear".
It was time to go off to the hospital now,
For they had the experts that would show me how,
To do my injections and test my blood,
All these instructions were as clear as mud!
My blood was taken and sent off to test,
My height was measured and my weight assessed,
I was given my first jab by a nurse,
All those pricks on my fingers couldn't be any worse!
I met Doctor Malik whose rules we'd obey,
There were things that had to be done straightaway,
My levels of insulin had to be set,
They'd write them all down so I didn't forget!
A lady called Emma helped me with my food,
With not really anything I have to exclude,
Just have to be careful like everyone else,
To balance my diet and leave the sweets on the shelf!
The last mention must go to Julie my nurse,
For without her it would have been alot worse,
She always makes me feel like I am the best,
Yes-My life's fantastic, Continually blessed!
