Emily 29/04 7 My Diabetes Story

Hi my name is Emily, I am 7 years old and I was diagnosed with Diabetes when I was 18 months old. When I was older about 3 years old I didn’t understand one bit about my Diabetes so I talked it over with my parents and nurse and doctor. Every morning when I get up I have to test my blood sugar level and at every meal and at bedtime Mum gives me some insulin. Once I had a really bad hypo and I couldn’t see my mum properly so an ambulance came and the sirens and blue lights were on. The ambulance lady was really nice and she was called Sandy and she gave me her lunchtime banana to eat because I needed some carbohydrate to get my blood sugars up.
At school I have a special lady called Mrs L. who comes at lunchtime to help me test my blood sugar and do my injection for me. At morning break I have some fruit to keep my blood sugars at the right level. At afternoon playtime I feel really special because I’m the only one that gets a biscuit, even better ,at P.E. times I get to have a chocolate biscuit, all the other children ask why I get a chocolate biscuit and me and my friends have to explain to them all about my diabetes. Now and then I go to clinic and have a check up. Sometimes I have to have a blood test, when I was little I used to have play leader Mel. But now I’m older I don’t have Mel any more. When I go to clinic this time I’m going to have a 24 hour monitor that monitors my blood sugar levels around the clock so my mum doesn’t have to get up in the night. Now we have not done the 24 hour monitor because my H. B. A. 1. C. is 7.2 which is good. I hope when I’m older to have a pump instead of 4 injections a day and I hope that my future will be a happy one.
I’m Emily I’m 7 years old and I have type 1 diabetes.
