Lydia 25/04 12 The Story Behind My Diabetes

Tuesday 8th July

On Tuesday just like a normal day I woke up and got ready to go to school, my schedule for today was assembly, double maths, double English, French and finally ICT! My mum had booked an appointment to see the doctor because I had lost a stone and a half in weight; I was drinking excessive amounts of fluids because I was always thirsty. We arrived at the doctor’s surgery and went into the waiting room, I was annoyed with my mum because I told her that it was probably just puberty, but as any mum would do, they always wants to make sure that your okay. Our doctor’s name flashed on the board and we were the next patients to see him. We knocked and went in and sat down, my mum told him about the excessive drinking and the weight loss, he gave a tube of which I had to do a urine sample in, I brought it back to him, he did a test using a keytone strip, he put it in my smaple and the strip went dark brown, he looked a bit shocked and surprised, he took his time to try and pull a more calm and normal face. He sat down and told me that there was a chance that I may have diabetes! Dr Hughes explained why, he told me that my keytones were very high, he told us to go to Frimley Park Hospital, and he would le them know that we were coming. I was very calm about it because I didn’t really understand it. We took Maddie, my younger sister round to Alexia’s house and then went straight to the hospital. We went straight through to A&E and got served straight away, she pricked my finger, it really hurt, she told me that my sugar level was 24, which was very high, your actual reading is supposed to be between 4-7. They did a blood test on me to make sure that my heart, kidneys, liver and lungs were okay. The results showed that I was fine, but that I had been diagnosed with diabetes. We were good to go home so we went to go and pick maddie up, and then went straight home, my mum, dad and I didn’t know what to do, and the only thing that I could think of was going to bed….

Wednesday 9th July

On Wednesday, it was my birthday, I was 12 years old, we opened my pressies in my bedroom, and they were great! I went to school for the first two lessons and then went to the hospital to learn and understand about the situation of diabetes. We met a nurse called Gillian, she was very kind and friendly. She showed me how to use the equipment and when I had to do it. Diabetics, Type 1’s basically cannot control there blood sugar levels, like normal people can, it happens when the pancreas stops working, and you need to produce insulin for your sugar level to go down, it can only be injected into yourself. There is also a meter where you need to do your blood sugar, to see how many units you need to inject, you also need to do your reading just in case you go low, this is where you do to many units or have done loads of exercise which brings your reading down low. She showed me how to do the pen {injection} and I did my first injection getting ready for lunch, I did it without any hesitation. I had a sandwich and a chocolate brownie, my reading before lunch was 20.2 it was still very high. F1 ward found out that it was my birthday and gave me some presents they were great presents. Finally it was 5.30pm when we left to go home we picked maddie up from school and went home. We had some birthday cake and had invited some people round to share it with us. I invited my Nan and grandad and my mums best friends Jane and John. We had some birthday cake, it was delicious, and it was my favourite cake chocolate with cream flakes and strawberries. The upside was because I had lost so much weight that I had no belly so I wanted to show of my new bikini and me.

Thursday 10th July

On Thursday we went to the hospital and spent some more time with Gillian, we had some lunch, which was a chocolate brownie and a sandwich. We left there to go to my school because my party was in the afternoon at 2.00pm, I waited under the arch at school for the people who I was supposed to be taking to my party, and they all came out. I took my friends Jessie and Maddie. When we arrived there, we were the first, we checked in, after 20 minutes we were all here except for Mudiwa, in the end she turned up, we all put our wet suits on and got into groups of 5’s, the first 5 which was me, got onto the banana boat and off we went, straight away we fell off. Then we got back on again, off we went again, I was in the front, I was supposed to be directing everyone but the one problem was, was that my helmet was too big, I couldn’t see anything. Even worse when we fell of the banana boat I had someone land on top of me. After 25mins we swapped over, but I stayed on. The second group that I was in didn’t even fall in once it was unbelievable, but I just thought that the driver was going easy on us. We went back ashore to do some water donutting, everyone had to pair up, I went with my friend April. It was so much fun it was almost like it was giving a bottom massage and everyone was laughing. I went on with Holly at the end because there was an odd number, Holly said that she wanted to go really slow but when she got out there she wanted to go faster than what the maximum speed was for it. For lunch we had McDonalds, the only problem was there wasn’t enough ketchup!

We went home and got prepared getting ready to go our for an evening meal to celebrate my birthday that was yesterday. Because of yesterday I was in the hospital most of the time, we decided to hold it until tonight. We were going to a restaurant called Manhattans it’s an Italian restaurant, but it does the best seafood including mussels! For a starter I had mussels there were at least 20 on a plate they were gorgeous, I wish I had more, then for a main I had spaghetti {pasta} with a rich tomato sauce and baby prawns mixed in, it was delicious. After are main meal, I had everyone singing happy birthday to me, what made it embarrassing was that there was French people in the restaurant and they were singing really loud. I had the candle put on my desert, Ice cream. We went home watched some TV and went to bed.

The last three days had been horrendous, I was diagnosed with diabetes and it hasn’t stopped me from doing anything, those days are over now and im just going to carry on with my life exactly how it was before,

24 April 2009

Ten months on and i had the perfect 6.5 on the HbA1c result. I am so proud of myself and if i can do it then you can.
Remember:
Don’t let diabetes control you, you control diabetes!
