DIABETES ESSAY AND POEM COMPETITION 2009

Ally 18/04 20 The Sweetness of My Life

At one point if you’d asked me,
I’d have said it was the worst;
That being a diabetic,
Would make my bubble burst,
But then one day I learnt something,
That saved me from despair,
When I realized I was not alone,
It wasn’t so hard to bear.

Chocolate this and chocolate that,
It was my favourite thing,
Ice cream and jelly babies,
Would be sure to make me sing,
Give me a doughnut any day,
Filled with jam and cream,
But now I know there’s more to life,
Than sweet food and ice cream.

Fairy cakes, gingerbread men,
Whether morning or afternoon;
I liked making banana cake -
Especially licking the spoon!
I loved all seasonal chocolate,
Especially egg-shaped and sweet;
Apple pie and hot custard
Would sweep me off my feet.
Tasty Raspberry cheesecake Would definitely make me beam, Strawberries and for goodness sake Don’t forget the cream. Profiteroles with chocolate sauce Are mouth-watering in my book, A chilling ice cream sundae Guarantees an Oliver-Twist-look. Jelly and Blancmange, Was something I enjoyed, My Gran’s chocolate cake, Still makes me jump for joy; Give me a scone any day, Filled with jam and cream, But now my life is sweet enough Without sugar-coated dreams.
