My thoughts about diabetes.
text

Thoughts about diabetes.

In this essay I am going to compare both my positive and negative thoughts about diabetes.

I was told that ten per cent of diabetics go on to develop coeliac disease. Unfortunately I was in that ten per cent. I feel that this has made my diabetes a lot more complicated and worse than it would have been with just diabetes.

I think that having diabetes is good because I feel it is helping me to have a healthier diet. If I did not have diabetes I would probably be eating a lot more sweets and not as much healthy food. I think diabetes is a bad thing because when you go on days out and holidays you cannot eat what everyone else is having and it makes me feel a bit annoyed. In addition, when you go out, everyone else has sugary desserts, which I wish I could have but usually I can only eat ice cream. Even then, if you have the sauce it makes your blood sugar go high.

Another bad thing about having diabetes is that I have to have at least five injections a day; I feel it would be better if they provided insulin pumps for those who wanted them and were willing to learn about them. I feel that since I have started carbohydrate counting it has increased my freedom to eat more foods at different times of the day, so this is a positive thing about it. The only negative thing about this is that you have to do more blood sugar testing and more injections.

I think another positive point is that sometimes when you have a hypo you get to miss some of a lesson. Another negative point is that when you go out for something to eat. or go for a day trip, you have to go to a toilet and do your injections. A further negative point is that the easily accessible sites on your body, such as your stomach, develop lumps so you have to stop injecting at that sight and start injecting in harder to access places such as your leg and bottom.

A further positive point is that when you are diabetic diabetes U.K and local support groups organise fun activities for you and other diabetics to take part in. These events include children's diabetic holidays and trips to Thorpe Park.

I think that listening to those who gave me advice helped me to keep healthy. This made my opinion of diabetes more positive.

The thing which I really hate about diabetes is the retinal screening. I know that this is very important to help prevent blindness and see how your sugar control is doing, but I find the eye drops really painful.

A positive thing is that I have looked after my diabetes well up until now. If I continue like this I should have a long and healthy life.

Overall, I believe there are quite a few positive and negative points about diabetes. Furthermore, I believe that the negatives of diabetes outweigh the positives. In addition, I believe that diabetes complicates your life. I also hope that they find a cure for diabetes in my lifetime.
