Diabetes - So What!
text

I had been going to the toilet a lot and my Mum thought I had an infection so we went to see my Doctor. My urine was tested and a couple of days later we were told it wasn't an infection. Two weeks later I was still going to the toilet a lot and was starting to feel headachy and tired, my sister needed to go to the Doctors so my Mum took me too. This time I felt thirsty so I told the Doctor and he tested my urine again and he said there was sugar in it. He told me to go upstairs to see the nurse and she would take some blood for testing.

By lunch time the next day I had been collected from school and was in hospital. I went to the children's ward I had to have another blood test. Then I had to sit and wait for a long time (boring) then the nurse said I had diabetes. I said "Diabetes - SO WHAT! My friend Alex has diabetes it doesn't bother about him. I stayed in hospital for a couple of days while the nurses told my mum and me all about diabetes and how to live with it.

I had learnt to do my own blood test and injections I can cope with it all, but washing my hands and keeping a record of my blood sugars is a pain in the neck. There are good things about having diabetes like not having that many fillings at the dentist, going to the diabetic party and outings going to the Calvert Trust holiday and getting my cinema pass.
