DIABETES ESSAY AND POEM COMPETITION 2010

Alastair 24/05 9 The Odd Holiday.

Once upon a time, there was a boy called Alex, who was a diabetic. He had to inject himself with needles every day to keep him healthy. He was looking for places to go on holiday on the internet when he found the perfect place. It had blue skies and sunny beaches and waves so gentle that anyone could surf on them. He was just about to double-click the image of the beach when his Mum called him for his test.

He should have said “just a minute” but he said “coming Mum” instead and the moment he closed his bedroom door, he received an email telling him that he had been entered into a free prize draw and had won a trip to the holiday place he was looking at and his computer would transport him there. When he came back, he double-clicked the image and suddenly he felt himself falling forwards. He closed his eyes.

When he opened his eyes, he realised he was at exactly the same place he had seen on the screen. It was exactly as he had imagined. But instead of just standing there, he decided to look around. After a while, a boy of about his age came up to him. They both said “hi” and asked each other’s names. The boy’s name was Bernard. He asked Alex if he wanted to come and see his village and Alex said “yes, please.”

He met the villagers and talked to them. Most of them spoke two languages and they seemed very nice. Just then, Alex spotted a volcano in the middle of the island. He asked Bernard whether the volcano was active and Bernard replied: “oh no, I don’t think it is. People say it has been asleep for millions of years.”

Later that day, there was a party. There was dancing, singing and eating. Alex thought: “oh dear, I won’t be able to do much eating as I haven’t got my kit with me.” But he ate a little bit of curry and danced a lot. He went to sleep late at night.

The next morning, Alex woke up quickly. There was a rumbling in the ground. Everyone was running around like headless chickens. Bernard yelled at him: “Wake up! The volcano is erupting! Run for your life!” Alex ran around and climbed up a palm tree. Suddenly he felt himself falling forwards and thought :”Oh no! I’m going to fall out of this tree!” but instead of falling out of the tree, he fell into his bedroom. He discovered that a portal had taken him there and was unhappy to think about what had happened to the island’s residents but then he heard talking. He turned around quickly and discovered that all the island’s residents had been taken with him! He thought: “Oh dear! How am I going to explain this to Mum? She’s already mad at me about that time I kept a frog in my underwear drawer!” But Alex’s Mum didn’t get angry – she just said “Dear me, where are we going to put these people?” Alex replied: “Let’s worry about that later, Mum, I need to test!!”

The End
