DIABETES ESSAY AND POEM COMPETITION 2010

Eden 22/05 13 Uniquely Normal.

I wake up in the morning,
And do my insulin,
It’s a normal routine for me,
Like putting rubbish in a bin

My friends don't notice either,
Its part of their normal lives as well,
I might be diabetic,
But a stranger couldn't tell

School is exactly the same,
As before I was diagnosed,
But if I had a choice,
I'm not sure this is the path I’d have chose

I have to wait 30 minutes,
Before I can eat my tea,
It gets annoying sometimes,
When I'm as hungry as can be

I don't look any different,
On the outside of me,
It’s just that my pancreas,
Is dead and out of glee

Even though I'm diabetic,
I'm not restricted in anyway,
I still go out with my friends,
And go on sleepovers most days

I know it sounds ridiculous,
But I quite like being diabetic,
It makes me special and unique
And happy and energetic
