DIABETES ESSAY AND POEM COMPETITION 2010

Hannah 19/05 8 My life with diabetes.

My name is Hannah and I have had diabetes for over a year now. I was diagnosed on the 1st of December 2008 when I had just turned seven. Ever since I have had diabetes my life has changed completely in good ways as well as bad. I can remember doing my first blood test and injection, feeling a sudden change in my life. I can remember my family standing by my side every step of a new beginning and I will never forget that. I never will. And when I will get a chance I will thank everyone, mainly my doctors, nurses and of course my family, for guiding me through my new life with diabetes.

I hadn’t been feeling well for a long time. Often I felt shaky, dizzy, grumpy and tired. I also had an incredible thirst that would never go away no matter how much I drank. I also needed to go to the toilet a lot and I was so sleepy. It was quite hard to concentrate at school and very hard to write and read. I kept getting grumpy and sick we had no idea what was going on. I started to feel better as soon as I had my first injection and now it’s easier to control my levels and moods. Every party and celebration I go to I have to do a blood test then give myself an injection and then remember what to eat.

I am now eight and coping well with my diabetes. Another thing is that diabetes does not stop you from doing anything. Here is a poem I wrote.

Diabetes is part of my life,
I can never forget it is part of me.
A life spent remembering blood tests and injections, But it has made me stronger.
Each day I discover new ways of coping and living, This has changed my life completely in good ways too.
Endless things to think about,
So I can journey towards my dreams.
